What Is the Right Mattress to Relieve Back Pain?

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you probably know that sleeping on the right mattress can help relieve your pain and can mean the difference between waking up in pain and getting through your day pain-free. The wrong mattress can actually worsen lower back pain. But a mattress designed to help your back and alleviate pain must be comfortable enough to help the user sleep well. Combining support and comfort is a task some mattresses cannot handle.

There are a bunch of mattress companies out there that claim they offer the best lumbar support, but even with the correct support for your back, you end up sacrificing comfort and quality.  It is impossible to find a mattress that offers the best support for your back pain, the comfort of a good night’s sleep, and still be affordable.

That is, until now. With our Juna Sleep System, our mattresses are fully customizable, allowing you to have both the support you need and the comfort you want. And since our Juna Sleep mattress comes with a lifetime comfort commitment, Juna will be the last mattress you will ever have to buy.

What Are the Major Types of Back Pain?

Back pain can be acute, subacute, or chronic, which depends on the length of time the pain lasts. Acute is short-term pain, maybe from a pulled muscle from lifting something too heavy. Subacute is usually from a more serious strain or injury that lasts from four to 12 weeks. Chronic back pain lasts for a longer length of time and could be the result of a serious accident or injury or an untreated back problem that has gotten worse over time.

Some common types of back injuries are:

Herniated discs
Herniated discs, also called ruptured or slipped discs, occur when the gel-like substances that cushion and separate the discs in your back become damaged or experience wear. Herniated discs are often very painful since, with the absence of the gel, it often results in a nerve being pinched or damaged. Often it is treated with medication, physical therapy, or surgery.

Muscles strains
Muscle strains are usually the result of an injury or from overusing the muscles. Called most often a lumbar (lower back) strain, it is caused when ligaments separate, stretch, or tear. This form of back pain can either be acute or subacute, depending on the extent of the injury. Sometimes lumbar strains occur from overuse over a long period of time.

Spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal, which causes pain when nerves are compressed. Spinal stenosis can result in treatable, milder pain to more severe conditions and even permanent damage, if left untreated.

Spinal fractures
Nearly always the result of an injury, such as auto accidents, falls, or trauma. People with spinal fractures often must wear a brace to immobilize the spine so it can heal correctly.

Osteoporosis and other signs of aging
Osteoporosis occurs when the bones become weaker and more brittle and are prone to breakage. With aging comes a decrease in bone density and with that decrease comes an increase in the likelihood of fractures. This condition happens more frequently in women over 65 years old but can show up in older men, as well.

What Can Patients Do to Alleviate Discomfort?

No, we are not a medical practice and we don’t pretend to be. That being said, we do know quite a lot about mattress comfort and solid support for sleepers. Here are some things that medical practitioners recommend for their patients suffering from back pain:

  • Keep moving if you can. Your doctor may recommend stretching or strengthening exercises to do as you recover.
  • Use the best posture you can when walking or even sitting. If you have been prescribed a brace, wear it.
  • Use assistance, if needed, such as pillows or towels to support you, braces as prescribed by your doctor, or devices to aid you in movement.
  • If you smoke, quit. Smoking affects your overall health and delays recovery in many cases.
  • Eat a healthy diet and maintain optimal weight.
  • Use an alternating treatment of heat and ice to relieve inflammation.
  • Use over-the-counter oral medications or creams to relieve pain and inflammation. Ask your doctor about supplements that can improve your bone health as you continue to get better.
  • Sleep on a mattress that offers both comfort and support. Juna Sleep Systems are easily customized for your best sleep, even while you suffer from back pain.

Always check with your doctor before taking any medical advice or altering any of your activities.

6 Simple Things You Can Do to Relieve Stress (including a mattress upgrade)

Stress is the human response to changes in the environment or challenging situations. To most people, the word stress has a negative connotation. However, stress has its positive side. Stress brings innovation and helps you accomplish tasks that appear difficult or impossible. However, too much stress is harmful, especially when one does not have coping mechanisms. You need to develop a coping mechanism to benefit from the positive side of stress. Fortunately, there are numerous ways of coping with stress, such as a mattress upgrade or exercise. As Alexander Pope puts it, the strength of mind is exercise, not rest. You do not have to look for sophisticated methods of coping with stress. Continue reading to get some simple and effective ways of managing stress.

1.  Physical Exercises

From the words of Alexander Pope, individuals can ease mental and physical stress with regular physical exercises. Medical experts also assert that physical workouts improve blood circulation and release feel-good hormones like endorphins. Regular exercise is not only good for the heart but also for the mind, which makes it a good stress coping mechanism.

As you read in the introduction, stress is mostly a mental reaction to change or intimidating issues. It can also come from physical tension. Both types of stress may lead to a sedentary life. When you are stressed, physical exercises appear like additional work. It would be hard to start a workout session from that perspective.

However, the intimidating aspect of workout sessions disappears when one begins to enjoy the exercise and derive mental and physical relaxation. That means you cannot reap the benefits of physical workouts if you do not take the bold step.

In addition, physical exercises do not have to be as intimidating as bodybuilding or preparing for the Olympics. Simple aerobic exercises like taking a walk are just fine. The aim here is not to prepare for a marathon competition but to relieve stress and keep fit. You can start small and progress as your body adjusts to the demand of different workout sessions.

2.  Breathe Easy

Shallow breathing can cause stress. No wonder it is common to hear people use the phrase “take a deep breath and relax.” To most people, this is an overused phrase founded on myths. However, there is some truth in it. People who practice relaxation techniques like yoga relieve stress through this breathing technique. Taking a deep breath oxygenates the blood and helps clear the mind.

The good thing about this relaxation method is you do not need specialized equipment. You only need to spare three to five minutes to ease your mind through the technique. While on your office chair, you can sit up with your feet flat on the floor and your hands on the knees. From this posture, breathe in slowly as you concentrate on nothing but the expansion of your lungs.

3.  Talk it Out

Most people find relief in sharing stressful issues with their trusted friends. Talking and verbalizing negative emotions have been used to treat stress and anxiety for centuries. The benefits of talking to a friend about stressing issues created the counseling career. A stressed individual finds help by talking to a counselor. It is important to note that one gets help from a counselor by speaking out about the issues that have been disturbing them.

You do not need a counselor every time you are stressed. Sharing stressing issues with a trusted friend is equally effective. A reassuring voice may be all that is a need in most stressful situations. However, one needs to exercise caution as not all friends can help. Classify your friends according to the level of healthy disclosures in the relationship.

For those who may not trust their friends, writing down what is stressing them can also help. Just pick a pen and paper and write down what is disturbing you. The aim here is to bring out the stressful emotions in writing or verbally.

4.  Laugh it Off

Laughter helps to release endorphins: a feel-good hormone that uplifts the mood of a stressed person. Laughter also tricks the nervous system to make one happy. You can watch a comedy or a funny movie or interact with friends that make you laugh. Any activity that triggers laughter can help in reducing stress.

5.  Eat Well

Regular balanced meals can help you cope with stress. However, when most people are stressed, they tend to crave sugary and fatty foods, which only worsens the situation. To avoid overindulging in unhealthy snacks, one should have plenty of fruits or other healthy appetizers. Foods rich in omega-3 also have stress-reducing capabilities.

6.  Upgrade Your Mattress

Sleep deprivation can lead to a higher level of stress, anxiety, and depression. One needs at least eight hours of sleep daily to cope with stress and other mental conditions. However, most people find it hard to get an 8-hour sleep daily. That means stress in most people is caused or aggravated by inadequate sleep. If you are currently going through chronic stress, it may be time for a mattress upgrade.

You can overcome the inability to fall asleep and enjoy at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep by getting the right mattress. In addition, you may also have to reduce caffeine intake, especially before bedtime. You can also avoid electronics like TV and smartphones to improve the quality of your sleep.

Juna Luxury: Come In And Try The Mattress

Because sleep is so important to both physical and mental health, a mattress plays a monumental role in overall well-being. A good night’s sleep is a luxury no one should try to live without.

Juna Sleep Systems builds luxury mattresses that provide a high-quality sleep experience. American made and assembled by hand in our factory, our mattresses are:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Dust mite resistant
  • Zero off-gassing

With lifetime comfort commitment technology, Juna mattresses are fully customizable and built to last. You owe it to yourself to try the mattress.

Juna Sleep Uses Top-quality Materials

Juna only uses products that are safe for our customers. We use natural, organic latex in our products, and our luxury mattress layers are combined using a non-toxic, water-based adhesive.

We don’t use cheap conventional polyurethane foams that sag long before they should. By utilizing high-quality luxury products throughout the entire Juna mattress build, we ensure every customer’s long-term satisfaction. Our products will not break down prematurely.

Customizable

At Juna, we can address any comfort need. Parts can be changed out at any time making it possible to have one side soft and the other side firm so that couples can both get a good night’s rest.

Due to the fact that bodies change every seven to eight years, your mattress probably should as well. With the Juna Sleep System, layers can be added or replaced to accommodate new sleep requirements. Should individual components wear out, replacing the parts restores the mattress to a like-new condition.

Parts can take as little as 5 to 10 minutes to install, so you never have to purchase a whole new item again. A Juna mattress is the last one you will ever have to buy.

Built to Last a Lifetime

According to Consumer Reports, the average lifetime of a mattress is three to seven years. Our mattresses come with 12 and 18 year warranties.

At Juna, we look at a mattress as its parts rather than as a whole. If a part wears out, we can replace it. If the firmness of the mattress is no longer satisfactory, we can fix that. Because we can replenish layers even past the warranty, every Juna mattress is truly built to last a lifetime.

Environmentally Friendly

The eco-friendly design of the Juna Sleep System is green toward the environment and your wallet. Because parts can be replaced or rearranged, customers save money by not having to buy a whole new mattress. Rather than being tossed into a landfill, old parts are recycled into carpet padding for Habitat for Humanity.

Every month, Juna donates a portion of earnings to a different non-profit organization in the community. When you purchase from Juna, we’re helping to make the world a better place for our neighbors together.

How Does the Lifetime Comfort Commitment Technology Work?

Juna mattresses are made only of the best quality materials, so they last longer than other mattresses. They also come with a 120-night risk-free trial and a lifetime comfort commitment. What that means is that for the lifetime of one of our mattresses, we are committed to keeping it as comfortable as possible. Mattress layers can be changed as your comfort preferences do.

A Juna mattress can also be repaired. You wouldn’t throw out your car just because it got a flat tire. The same is true of our mattresses. If a part no longer works or for some reason begins to break down, it can be replaced.

For owners who live within a 100-mile radius of a Juna store, we’ll come in and adjust your mattress right in your home. This is free of any labor or delivery charges. For owners outside the 100-mile radius, we can walk you through the method for making changes to your mattress.

Your comfort preference is always our top priority.

The Juna Sleep Lifetime Comfort Commitment

The absence of sufficient sleep can impact your overall health. You need approximately eight hours of sleep every 24 hours, and there’s no better way to guarantee restful sleep than investing in the right mattress. Thanks to its restorative properties, a good night’s sleep is imperative for anyone struggling with back pain or even stress.

The average human being spends a third of their life sleeping. Unfortunately, few people have a high-quality sleep experience because they buy cheap and substandard mattresses. Although a high-quality foam mattress from Juna Sleep Systems may be costly, it’s worth the price. The best part is that Juna buyers benefit from the brand’s lifetime comfort commitment.

A Sustainable Approach to Optimum Comfort

Did you know that sustainability also makes for a restful sleep?

At Juna, we believe that a sustainable approach goes a long way in delivering the optimum comfort our mattresses are known for. Juna cares for the environment as much as it cares about customers’ health and comfort. Juna mattresses are good for you and the environment. They’re made using eco-friendly and sustainable production processes. Here’s a look at Juna’s commitment to sustainability:

  • Resource conservation: Less material is used during production, yet Juna mattresses still have superior density and are more durable than other mattresses.
  • Product safety: Juna mattresses ditch the conventional polyurethane foams in favor of longer-lasting and safer materials. The materials are safety-certified and devoid of preservatives, harmful dyes, and heavy metals.
  • Sustainable logistics: Shipping is free within 100 miles of Juna stores. The short transport distances and direct dispatches minimize Juna’s ecological footprint.

Juna Mattresses Don’t Clog Up Landfills

Thirty million mattresses end up in landfills every year. Conventional mattresses need to get replaced every so often, but that cannot be said of Juna mattresses. An average mattress lasts for three to six years, but Juna mattresses are built to last a lifetime. They get manufactured in parts, which can get replaced if they wear out within the warranty, negating the need to replace the entire mattress.

If customers need a comfort adjustment, they won’t have to replace your mattress because that will be done for you as part of the Juna Lifetime Comfort Commitment. Mattress layers can get replenished even beyond your warranty.

Juna Mattresses Change With Users’ Comfort Preferences

Research indicates that the human body changes every seven to eight years, and so should your mattress. Juna mattresses can be adjusted to match users’ comfort preferences. For instance, if they need one side of their bed made firmer or softer, the team from Juna will do that for them.

Those living within 100 miles of a Juna store can have comfort adjustments made to their mattresses free of labor and delivery fees. If you live outside the 100-mile radius, you’ll get advice on the changes needed to match your comfort preferences. Indeed, no other mattress brand offers such a lifetime comfort commitment.

Get Yourself a Repairable Mattress

When a mattress wears out, the first thing that crosses the mind is to replace it with a new one. Replacing old mattresses is only expensive and contributes to environmental degradation since millions of old mattresses end up in landfills.

Juna does things differently since their mattresses are like cars. They are made of individual components, and should any wear out, all that’s needed to restore the mattress to a new-like condition is replacing the part. Individual layers can get replaced, and therefore, a Juna mattress can last a lifetime.

There’s a Mattress for Everyone

Juna manufactures mattresses for everyone. Buyers can have their mattresses personalized to fit their exact needs. Thanks to the proprietary ZIP and Flip System, anything and everything about the mattresses can be changed. So, whether someone wants their bed soft, plush, medium, or firm, their needs will be satisfied.

Each mattress comes with a removable and washable cover that allows a change in the level of firmness. Juna believes in unmatched service for its customers. For this reason, all products are made factory-direct. Even after using a Juna mattress for years, it can still get adjusted to suit the user’s preferences.

Made with users’ comfort and health in mind, Juna mattresses are excellent for those in need of care. Thanks to the unmatched weight and pressure distribution, the mattresses promote a change of lying and sleeping position through the night, lowering the risk of bedsores.

Premium Mattresses for Healthier Sleep

Whether you prefer the Choice or Presidential Series mattresses, you’re guaranteed a mattress with active foam technology that can adapt and provide the requisite support all night long. The mattresses leverage dynamic foam technology to deliver pressure point relieving benefits and the most rejuvenating sleep one can have.

Juna’s specially engineered mattresses combine impact resilience and pressure relief functionality to enhance sleep quality. They get manufactured in strict adherence to the highest standards of climate regulation, air permeability, and ergonomic stability to optimize sleep.

The Juna Sleep Difference

It’s a no-brainer that mattress companies aren’t the same. However, when shopping for mattresses, one is bound to realize that they are more or less the same. Juna does things differently by manufacturing some of the most distinctive foam mattresses. After being in the mattress business for years, the mattress experts understand all the tricks in the book. They also know the crazy markups, high-pressure sales strategies, and cheap marketing gimmicks that other brands use.

Juna doesn’t cut corners, especially when it comes to quality. The mattress experts want to deliver the best sleep ever. As a result, they seek to stand out from the pack with an unmatched commitment to quality, honesty, and customers. Because Juna’s warranty and lifetime comfort commitment are real, high-quality components are used to create every mattress and ensure each customer’s long-term satisfaction.

The Choice Series mattresses are backed with a 120-night risk-free trial, a 12-year warranty, and a free return policy. On the other hand, the Presidential series mattresses have an 18-year warranty. If you’re looking to upgrade to a premium mattress that guarantees a lifetime of restful and comforting sleep, check out the range of fine mattresses at Juna to find what suits you. BREAKFAST IN BED

On Mother’s Day, there are countless ways to show Mom just how much you appreciate all she has done for you over the years, but our favorite show of affection is, of course, breakfast in bed! Serving anything from toast and eggs to elaborate heart shaped waffles (peanut-butter pancakes are a great go-to option), breakfast in bed is a great way to show mom how much you care… but it got us thinking… where did this custom originate?

A Little History

Diving into history, breakfast in bed is was an indulgence enjoyed by affluent married women who had the luxury of servants in their home. They were allowed to enjoy breakfast in their sleeping quarters while men would start the day eating breakfast in the family room or drawing room. As this custom began to fall out of favor with cultural changes over the years, it is still often used as a way to pamper mom on Mother’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day

So no matter how you choose to celebrate Mom, make sure to let her know how much you appreciate her love this Mother’s Day!

CHOOSING A BETTER MATTRESS WITH YOUR BETTER HALF

If you and your significant other are like most couples the two of you divide and conquer when it comes to mattress shopping. But the secret to reaching nap-time success lies with both of you taking an active role in choosing the best bed.

‘Hood Magazine asked us to share tips for shopping for the right mattress, read our recommendations, here: Choosing a Better Mattress with your Better Half, ‘Hood Magazine, February 2017 Issue

WHY READING A BOOK CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

In today’s day and age, we are connected at all times… which rings true as this is being written from the couch on a laptop, while watching Netflix, and checking our phones. It’s incredibly tempting to send another snap, check Instagram, and check our news feed just one more time before bed, and we have all squeezed in just one more Netflix episode on a binge watching spree, so it’s no surprise that technology is often the last thing we see at night… butt the light from this tech could be slowly killing you.

Say what?

It’s become common knowledge that the blue light emitted by technology can be detrimental to your sleep by suppressing the amount of melatonin (the hormone in our bodies that anticipates darkness, and therefore, sleep), but research has gone a step further to show that chronic suppression of melatonin has been associated with increased of certain cancers according to neuroscientist Dr. Anne-Marie Chang in Huffington Post.

Pick up that paperback

Sleep deficiency has been linked to a myriad of health issues, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Never before has there been a better reason to crawl into bed and pick up the old paperback before calling it a night. If you do use your phone or tablet, check out options for blue light filters, such as Night Shift, which is available on iOS 9.3 and Andriod. Soon the only trick will be to put the book down and get some sleep!

SHOPPING FOR A NEW MATTRESS

When shopping for a new mattress, it can be easy to be overwhelmed with statistics… and often they don’t mean much to you as the consumer. Foam density is one of the most often misunderstood statistics in the mattress industry and can often be used as a tactic to get you to buy a higher price mattress. While foam density is an important statistic, a little bit of education on the topic and you will be prepared to evaluate what all of these foam density statistics mean. In simplest terms, foam density plays an important role in the overall comfort of your mattress. Foam density is measured by weighing a cubic foot of foam. As a rule of thumb, higher foam density typically offers better support and lasts longer. A high density support core paired with lighter foams (typically gel foam and latex foam in the comfort layers) is how you get the perfect mattress as a result.

Comfort

Beware of tactics where you are upcharged for higher density foams. Industry average for foam support is 1.8lbs density or lower, and anywhere between two and four pound foam density is the sweet spot for mattress comfort. Less than two pound density and your mattress lacks support. Once you get above four pounds density, the high density of the foam causes the mattress to sleep hot and becomes uncomfortable. Balancing these two variables, we use a 2.4lbs EnergeX, 4lbs 6th generation gel foam, organic Latex and 2.4lbs density in our support core to give you optimal support through the life of your mattress.

Mattress Life

Mattress density also is a variable in the overall life of your mattress. The lower the foam density, the more quickly the foam breaks down with use and fails. Because of this, we use a higher density foam that provides lasting support, and pairs well with with the comfort layers and our lumbar support strip to give you the best possible balance between supporting your weight through the night and that “don’t want to get out of bed” feeling of a great night’s sleep.

What does it all Mean?

The most important thing when you are mattress shopping is finding a quality, comfortable bed. It’s easy to get lost in the technical details about mattress composition, foams, etc. Ultimately, if you know what is most important to you about your sleep and have done a little background research, you will find the bed meets your needs.
